Riverside Hide

Nestled in the reeds, overlooking the beautiful River Deben, this bespoke Riverside Hide offers amazing sunset views and a wonderful space to unwind surrounded by nature.

For some time, we have wanted to make better use of a beautiful part of our home. It is a waterside location surrounded by reeds. The perfect place for a bird hide, where we could spend time while being protected from the weather.

The site is vulnerable to tides so we had to raise the hide on stilts. We also wanted to ensure it blended in with the surrounding reeds.

The brief was difficult because access was restricted, no electricity on site, and no appropriate templates we could find for what we had in mind.

It would need imagination to plan and build, as well as excellent carpentry skills.

As the build progressed, we would liaise with Jake regularly, which allowed us to overcome problems as they arose.

The finished hide is utterly beautiful. It has turned a neglected space into a much-loved bolt hole.

It sits on its wooden stilts facing the setting sun. As the wood matures it is turning silver and is almost invisible amongst the reeds.

Jake is a talented and imaginative carpenter. He is also honest and reliable. We will definitely use him again. Hopefully he won’t get too booked up!
